Understanding that nursing is a culmination of science, compassion, ethical values and skills gained through ample experience within diverse settings is the basis of my approach. Education is not a one-size-fits-all discipline. Fostering a supportive and engaging learning environment that empowers students to become competent, compassionate, and lifelong learners is important for the future of nursing. My teaching philosophy is rooted in the phases of Boyer’s Model for Scholarship Nursing.
Scholarship in nursing is an imperative element in nursing; the foundation to quality in nursing education and practice. Boyer highlighted four components of an educator’s scholarly engagement: discovery, integration, application and teaching. The use of Boyer’s Model for Scholarship Nursing includes several phases of enhancing student knowledge and educator effectiveness: Phases of Discovery, Integration, Application and Teaching are critical in both education and in community leadership.
DISCOVERY: Constructing new knowledge from carefully designed research by doing analysis more closely aligned with the traditional view of scholarship.
INTEGRATION: Stressing the importance of interdisciplinary inter-connectedness in research and proposes that all research should be seen as part of a cohesive whole. Integration, the ability to bring together and interpret information to make connections across topics or disciplines, should be given an elevated status in scholarship, given the rapid pace of societal evolution.
APPLICATION: Emphasizing practicality in higher education by promoting research that addresses societal issues and utilizes academic knowledge to benefit nonprofits, commerce, and professional associations. By engaging with peers and professionals, we can examine existing challenges and find ways to benefit the community.
TEACHING: Encouraging educators to develop learning theory and test the efficacy of teaching strategies. Boyer encouraged institutions to put a premium on excellence in teaching and improve student learning.
It is essential that I am able to tailor my lessons in a way that they can reach a multitude of audiences. By utilizing the Boyer’s Model along with engaging with students and staff through the use of face to face classes, laboratory lessons, virtual classrooms and many more tools, I am able to both teach and inspire those who hold the future of nursing in their hands.
